Jeddah
Jeddah is a city located on the Red Sea coast of western Saudi Arabia. It is the second-largest city in the country and serves as a gateway to the holy city of Mecca, which is located about 70 km to the east. Jeddah is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city that offers a unique blend of modernity and tradition.
The city has a rich history, dating back to the 7th century, and has been an important center of trade and commerce for centuries. Jeddah is also known for its stunning architecture, including the iconic King Fahd's Fountain, which is the highest fountain in the world, and the historic Al-Balad district, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of the city's main attractions is its stunning coastline, which is dotted with sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. Overview
The fact that tourist visas to Saudi Arabia are very hard to come means that Jeddah does not feature as a premier tourist destination amongst non Muslims either. This is a shame as Jeddah actually has a lot to offer visitors from all cultures and religions. Umra combined with a holiday in Jeddah is definitely something worth considering and a Saudi Arabia tourist itinerary should definitely include a couple of nights in this city.
Destination: Shisha on the Red Sea

One of the most popular downtime activities in Jeddah is smoking shisha at one of the many hotels or cafes along the corniche. A limited number of pilgrims are starting to sandwich a holiday in Jeddah into their itinerary. This is not surprising as many pilgrim s, especially from the West, have for years combined a holiday in one of the Gulf countries with their spiritually journey to Makkah and Medina. A Jeddah holiday before or after the pilgrimage can be more cost effective than travelling to multiple countries and it is definitely less strenuous. For observant Muslims Jeddah offers resorts that specifically cater to their needs. The Movenpick al Nawras, which is an all villa resort, features one and two bedroom units each with its own private pool. The swimming pools uniquely overlook the Red Sea whilst being cleverly configured to ensure total privacy for female swimmers who observe the hijab. It is also possible to rent a private villa on the beach in areas like Obhur.
Destination: Water Sports in Saudi Arabia???

The fact that women in Saudi Arabia need to cover up means that families who want to enjoy the warm waters of the Red Sea have to be creative. Families can rent a boat and head out just far enough to be invisible from the shore but close enough to be safe. Other water based activities available in Jeddah include Scuba Diving and Deep Sea diving, fishing and of course all the traditional fun water activities, like jet skiing, kiting and wind-surfing. Being a coastal city means that the water is an important part of Jeddah life and The Floating Mosque, located on the North Corniche embraces this important aspect of Jeddah life. Some of the 5* hotels even have access to private beaches for their guests where normal beachwear for men and women is acceptable without restriction.
Destination: Haloodies and Shopping

Muslim foodies will not be disappointed with the culinary offering during their holiday in Jeddah. Whilst the gulf countries may tempt the new breed of Haloodies seeking more than just the cuisines offered by traditional Muslim cultures, none of these destinations can claim to be entirely free of pork and alcohol. Jeddah offers cuisines from around the world at various 5* hotels as well as premier eateries across the city. Jeddah features some western branded food outlets that have yet to make it to the rest of the Gulf countries and traditional cuisine from across Asia and the Middle East is widely available. An Arab destination would be incomplete without the pre-requisite malls, and Jeddah does not disappoint. The Mall of Arabia is supposedly the largest mall in the Kingdom and has a built up area of 261,000 sq meters which is approximately the same size as the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai. Unlike Dubai however, Jeddah also offers traditional souks which provide an experience reminiscent to the bazaars of Egypt and Syria.
Destination: Avoid the Haj Season

Jeddah is also the gateway to Mecca which millions of Muslims from all over the world make a Hajj Pilgrimage to every year. This is the peak season and it is best to avoid visiting Jeddah during this time as the city is over populated with the pilgrimage traffic.
Destination: Summer time

Summer is very hot and humid with the average temperature ranging between a maximum of 39 degrees dropping to an average minimum of 26 degrees. July is the hottest month. During the summer vacations Jeddah holds a festival; Jeddah Ghir (meaning Jeddah is different) which is the most important festival in the whole of Saudi Arabia. The festival consists of about 250 events which include competitions, market fairs, artistic and cultural games and exhibitions of photography and fine arts.
The world’s highest fountain; King Fahd’s Fountain also known as Jeddah fountain is one of the main attractions and is best seen at night or at dawn as the flood lights give the fountain the most fascinating and exotic colors. Other important sites which must be visited in Jeddah are the Mecca Gate, the Floating Mosque, and other various historical sites.
Destination: Jeddah Wall and Historical Gates

The Jeddah Wall encircles the city around all sides like a ring. A Mumluk sultan ordered its construction to protect it from the raids of Portuguese invaders in their quest to control navigation of the Red Sea. Throughout the wall are seven gates linking Jeddah to the outside world, which were constructed in stages over time according to necessity. They are Makkah Gate, Shareef Gate, Jadeed Gate, Al Bent Gate, Magharbah Gate, as well as a new gate added at the dawn of the century, the Sebbah Gate.
Destination: Districts of Old Jeddah

Jeddah was sectioned into a number of districts within its wall. Locals of the city called them districts or Haras (Arabic for neighborhoods). These districts gained their names either from their geographical locations within the city or due to a major event that they experienced. The districts are Harat Al Madhloom, Harat Al Sham, Harat Al Yemen, Harat Al Bahr, Harat Al Karnateena and Harat Al Milyon Tifl.
Destination: Houses of Old Jeddah

The old houses of Historic Jeddah were built based on old designs and architectural style, that served as an authentic and genuine form of art.
Locals built their houses using carefully quarried rocks from the nearby “Arba’een Lake". The rocks were reshaped using hand tools and set according to their sizes along the wooden beams obtained from the surrounding areas, such as Wadi Fatima, or imported from other countries, especially from India through the local seaport. They used clay dug out from the bottom of “Bahr Al-teen Lake” to bind the rocks. Construction method was to position rocks into Midameks, which are blocks of rocks being separated by wooden beams called “Taqalils”. Wooden beams were separated by a meter apart. This method helped distribution of weight evenly on the walls. Older buildings to a large extent resemble the modern buildings in the area, where the wooden beams are used to hold the rocks and concrete together, and also to reduce weight on the building.
Destination: Jeddah Markets and life

Along the facades of closely aligned houses, locked doors, still windows and winding narrow alleys, are owners long gone, leaving behind life stories, and a beautiful past that once filled these homes.
The approximate area within the walls of Old Jeddah is estimated at about 1.5 square kilometers. It still possesses traces of traditional life reflecting the old social and economic nature, which is currently concentrated around the mosques and souks of the area. There are a number of handicraft shops scattered around. Some of the most popular shops in the historical area, past and present, which form the economic and dynamic backbone of the area are, Alawi Souk, Bedu Souk, Qabil Souk and Nada Souk. In addition to the historical Khans, also called kaysariya, i.e., closed roof markets with connected shops. Key Khans of Jeddah are Khan Al Hnood, Khan Al Qasabah, which is a fabric store, Khan Al Dalaleen and Khan Al Atareen.
Destination: Al Rauf Khalil Museum

The city’s history dates back around 2000 years and offering insight into this glorious history is the Al Rauf Khalil Museum. Located at the Al Madani Street, Al Rauf Khalil is one of the most visited museums in the city. Featuring a mosque, house Of Saudi Arabian Heritage, House of Islamic Heritage, front of a citadel, it is also known for hosting the famous Public Heritage Exhibition. If you want to experience true flavors of the authentic Arab culture, Al Rauf Khalil is the name.
Destination: Municipality Museum

Enjoying an accessible location on the Prince Turki Highway, you will come across the Municipality Museum right in front of the Ministry Of Interior. According to rumors, the museum was originally built by fishermen who used to love collecting stones, corals and shells from Red sea. This museum has many surprises in store for you as here you will find paintings displayed by some of the most eminent artists in the country.
Destination: Al Tayabat Museum

Sitting proudly in the heart of the city, Al Tayabat Museum is only two kilometers away from The Le Meridian Hotel in Jeddah. Al Tayabat is actually more of a small city representing several civilizations. It offers visitors a unique experience and is definitely worth a visit. The museum has around 300 rooms where you get a chance to tread along the country’s history. From rock carvings to Arabic costumes, pottery to tapestries, you will find a huge assortment of intriguing artifacts here.
Destination: Jeddah Regional Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography

As the name suggests, this beautiful museum is located in the port city. As one of the biggest museums in the country, it was essentially a royal palace constructed under the supervision of Muhammad Bin Laden. Housing an impressive collection, here you will find traditional Arab artifacts belonging to Stone Age. These relics reflect the abrupt rise of Islam and there are several other items that portray the region’s recent culture as well.
Destination: Khozam Palace Museum

In close proximity to the Movenpick Hotel, Khozam Palace is a well-loved tourist stop with a history that dates back 8 decades. The museum not only houses belongings from royalty, it promises you a unique chance to see possessions of the First Muslim Caliph Abu Bakr Siddique.
Destination: Red Sea Mall

Associated with a well-known chain store known as Danube, the Red Sea Mall started operating few years ago only as is known to have three floors in total with eighteen gates for entry, stunning water fountains, aquariums and a huge parking lot for about 4000 vehicles. It consists of astonishing family areas, food courts with several food chains and a lovely section for kids where events are organized specially for them.
Destination: Jeddah and Roshan Mall

Both of these malls are quite different as the Jeddah Mall is smaller and compact in size whereas the Roshan mall is so huge that it would take time for a person to explore it. However, both of them offer family entertainments, and food courts. The Roshan Mall is associated with HyperPanda which is a chain store.
Destination: Mall of Arabia and Heraa Mall

Being a single level mall, Heraa Mall has a wide range of stores to attract people in going there and also has a big food court with a separate children’s section! However, nothing beats the Mall of Arabia. With having a three floor dining area, 330 shops, parking space, a huge enjoyment park, a Snow village where shoppers can enjoy snow, a chain store Geant which offers a large variety of products and activities going on for both the adults and kids, it is said to be the largestand most beautiful mall of Jeddah!

Jeddah
Start the day working on the Saudi bigger picture in the Tayebat museum to gain background about Islam, Saudi Arabia and Jeddah. The Tayebat museum consists of real-live-size examples of Saudi and especially Jeddahwi building styles, everyday tools and utensils, art and of course details about the Two Holy Cities; Mecca and Medina. After visiting a selection of what is on display, let’s head out into the real Saudi!
Jeddah’s proximity to the Red Sea puts local seafood at the forefront. The Central Fish Market is the hotspot where buyers and sellers come together. Squid, shrimp, lobster and a great variety of fish, some only native to the Red Sea, are all fresh and on display. Follow the flow of the market where customers first choose their pick. Next they move on to have it weighed and get a ticket for the cleaning section, All set? Now it can be prepared in the restaurant right in the market or taken home. To stay in style, enjoy a seafood lunch in a nearby restaurant.
Optional half-day of snorkeling and swimming program!
Experience the Red Sea! Hop on a private speedboat to enjoy the sea and sun. Snorkeling gear is packed to discover the wealth of underwater life the region is famous for. Different types of colorful coral, old sorts of exotic fish; snorkeling along the coral sites will impress. These shallow waters make it fun for all levels. The temperatures of the water are at least 21C and the high salinity is beneficial for your health. Top off the trip with a seafood barbeque, skillfully prepared by your skipper.
Find out that things are equally convivial on dry land in the atmospheric old town Al Balad, which achieved UNESCO World Heritage status in 2014. Its traditional multi storey buildings and merchant houses are an architectural treasure trove. Head back in time with the buzz of trading, pilgrims shopping and the occasional tourist mixed in. The roshan or wooden window covers are the ancient way to create shade and cool in this hot and humid climate, and they make these alleys especially picturesque. Visiting Al Balad is like a dive back in time with the buzz of trading, pilgrims shopping and the occasional tourist mixed in. In a quickly modernizing Kingdom, this area might be the last one to find that ‘real Middle Eastern mix of sights and smells’ that you can find in the old souks across the region.

Jeddah - Medina
Today is for following ‘the footsteps of prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him)’ to The Holy City of Medina. His early followers undertook this journey on foot and by camel. Present day’s pilgrims go by Haramain, Saudi Arabia’s state-of-the-art high-speed train system, which makes it a short (under two hours) hop to Medina, one of Islam’s holiest pilgrimage sites.
Medina is one of the two most sacred cities in Islam (the other is Mecca). Medina is centered around Al Masjid an Nabawi, also known as the Prophet’s Mosque, which was constructed by the Prophet himself and is also where he is buried. For a showstopping finale to a remarkable day, experience exterior views of the wonder of the Prophet’s Mosque: a 10-minaret giant that can accommodate one million people. Join the throngs of pilgrims, it is hard to describe the vibe.
Non-muslims are welcome to enjoy exterior views of the mosque from the edge of the square. When the sun sinks it is a great time to visit Mount Uhud, a major pilgrimage site and viewpoint across the Holy City.

Medina - AlUla
There’s much more to Medina than its primary holy site. Guests will get the chance to visit the terminus station of the Hijaz or Ottoman railway, which once brought pilgrims to Medina from as far away as Damascus in Syria. Guests will round out their time in Medina with some browsing time at the city’s central market. Saudis are known for having a sweet tooth and the stalls at this bustling souk are ideal snaffling territory for goodies such as ma’amoul (butter cookies stuffed with pistachios, walnuts, almonds, or dates), luqaimat (hot, crispy dumplings drizzled in honey) and kunafa (a kind of sweet cheese pie made with semolina pastry and rose water syrup).
A fascinating road trip from Medina to AlUla, home to Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, awaits. These destinations sit deep in the desert in the northwestern region of the country. Don’t expect only sand dunes, this is a volcanic area with black lava stone and mountain vistas and rich in historical significance.
Arriving in AlUla before sunset leaves ample scope for a pilgrimage to Elephant Rock. Set in golden desert sands and climbing into the blue Arabian skies, the rock (also known as Jabal Alfil) is one of AlUla’s most impressive geological marvels.
Overnight at Habitas Resort AlUla in a Canyon Villa.

AlUla
The draw to AlUla is its remarkable natural rock formations and canyons, extensive and varied pre-Arabic rock art, and immaculately preserved tombs built more than 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans. You’ll start the day with a visit to the Nabataean site of Hegra, which was the southern capital of the Nabataean kingdom, dating back to the first century BCE. Today, visitors follow their ‘rawee’ or storyteller, to explore several of the more than 100 well-preserved monumental tombs, most with elaborate facades carved from rock formations scattered around the desert.
Next, head for the green zone that is AlUla Oasis, and enjoy a cup of coffee at The Pink Camel, situated beautifully amid the date farms. Take a stroll where lush palm trees sway gently and the smell of citrus fills the fresh air. Follow the winding, shaded Oasis Heritage Trail through the orange grove, hear birds and imagine how the nomads of the past found water and refuge from the desert here.
Exit the lush oasis at AlJadeeda, an area known also as ‘Art City’ which has a colourful vibe with street art and art exhibits spread out in its walking streets. Continue exploring AlUla historic city, often called ‘the Old Town,’ a charismatic place that once sat at the crossroads of the Silk Road and the Incense Route, and that rewards a leisurely stroll. Recent renovations have turned it into a magical mix of ancient alleys, trendy restaurants and upmarket souvenir shops.
The remaining afternoon is at leisure. Enjoy the facilities of the hotel or continue your exploration of AlUla’s landscapes with an optional activity: to name a few; see the sandstone mountains from above in a helicopter or hot air balloon (in season), hop on a mountain bike and venture off the beaten path into desert dunes or climb the valley’s edge to better soak in AlUla’s expansive vistas.

Riyadh
Discover the wealth of contrasts that distinguish Riyadh. Historical highlights here include Masmak Fort, Souq al Zel, and cultural centres such as the National Museum and the Murabba Palace. And of course At Turaif in the Diriya area, once the heart and start of the Kingdom. Whilst making your way across the city you will note the contrast between these local marketplaces and the city’s sparkling highrise.
Begin the day with a visit to the Diriyah area, the birthplace of the first Saudi state called At-Turaif which ruled between 1744 and 1818. The UNESCO World Heritage site has just been stunningly restored to its former glory and is poised to become a cornerstone of the Kingdom’s tourism offerings. Discover all about the architecture and heritage at the site. Find out how the mud-brick houses were built; how homes were cooled during the hot summer days; and how people lived without electricity and creature comforts
It’s time to explore other pointers toward Saudi’s charismatic past. You’ll find Al Masmak Fortress in the heart of the old town. A large clay and mud-brick citadel that witnessed the birth of a kingdom, the 150-year-old edifice stands as a reminder of Saudi’s storied past. Justice Square is another reminder of the past. Roaming this ordinary neighbourhood on foot you discover mud houses, just like this morning, abandoned not long ago. You’ll learn more about Saudi history at Murabba Palace and at the fantastic National Museum of Saudi Arabia.
Towards the end of a busy day head for Souq al Zel and Souq Bisht, two of the most characteristic traditional marketplaces in town and uniquely atmospheric hubs of Arabian commerce. This is the ideal spot to acquire a memento for your journey back. Complete the Riaydh feeling by mingling with the locals in one of the city parks or squares that come alive with socializing activities once the sun rays disappear.
